The Pharmacy industry is dynamic, exciting and there are many job opportunities for qualified Pharmacy Technicians. You can play a key role in helping patients feel better and get well as fast as possible.

During this pharmacy technician course you will learn everything you need to know to become a Pharmacy Technician. You’ll learn how to provide accurate health advice to customers and your community.

On Campus: You’ll experience practical learning on campus which will teach you all the key skills and pharmaceutical knowledge you need to start your career. Plus, during your studies, you'll have the opportunity to gain real-world experience by completing 320 hours at a pharmacy provider as part of your training.

Online: You'll need to be working or volunteering at a pharmacy provider to take advantage of our online study option. This will help you advance your skills while you continue to work, giving you the flexibility, tools and resources to learn anytime, anywhere at your own pace.

  • Pharmacy law dispensing processes: legislation, codes and standards which govern pharmacy practice.

  • Dispensing techniques: accurately prepare and dispense prescriptions.

  • Different forms of compliance packaging.

  • Pharmacy health: routes of administration and the formulations of medicines.

  • Anatomy and physiology.

  • To recognise how different body systems work and their disorders.

  • Professionalism and support: communication skills appropriate to pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician Course - Start Dates

As part of studying our Pharmacy Technician Level 5 course you'll receive two qualifications

  • NZ Certificate in Pharmacy (Pharmacy Technician - Core) (Level 4)

  • NZ Certificate in Pharmacy (Pharmacy Technician - Advanced) (Level 5)

Ākonga must:

  • Applicants must hold the New Zealand Certificate in Pharmacy (Introduction to Pharmacy Practice) (Level 3) [Ref: 1886] Or equivalent skills and knowledge of working in a New Zealand pharmacy and hold a secondary/tertiary qualification at NZQF Level 3 or equivalent.

  • Have an acceptable New Zealand Police vet check prior to the beginning of practical experience.

  • Applicants with English as second language may need to demonstrate sufficiency in English language via Internal Evaluation Test.

International students additional to the above must meet the following criteria:

  • An academic or General IELTS score of 6 is required with no band score lower than 5.5 or equivalent Internationally Recognised English Proficiency test. IELTS 6.5 is highly recommended to be successful in the programme due to the high level of technical content in the programme; and an interview may be required.

  • International students must have travel and medical insurance and a valid visa.

  • International students and Chemist Warehouse: Conditions apply around work visa restrictions.

  • Other English Tests / evidence may be approved as advised by NZQA

Additional for Distance (online) Learners:

  • Must be already employed (paid or voluntary) in a pharmacy for a minimum of 20 hours per week.

  • Our online intakes are currently only offered to domestic students.
