Enrol NowOur hands-on 35-week programme sets you up to enter the electrical industry as an entry-level employee. You could land a job as Electricity Supply Electrical Apprentice or an Industrial Electrical Apprentice or pathway into further study and become a qualified electrician.
The course is pre-entry foundation knowledge of electrical engineering and is suitable for those who wish to enter the industry and who do not yet have electrical apprenticeship agreement.
You’ll get to wire a sleepout and carry out a limited range of prescribed electrical work safely and ethically under general supervision of a licensed and registered electrician.
This course is a mix of campus-based study and online learning (on-site hours vary from 12 hours per week, online 8 hours per week, and 14 hours of self-directed learning in your own time).
This course is also part of the government led Youth Guarantee Programme. If you are aged 16-24, and meet the course entry requirements, you have a chance to attend this course for FREE!*

You will learn:
Basic electrical theory, concepts and trade practice.
Workplace safety.
Legislation, codes of practice and standards.
Knowledge of NZ electricity supply.
Basic practical skills required by electricians.
Drawing and interpreting electrical diagrams.
Knowledge of electric motors.

MĀORI AND PASIFIKA TRADES TRAINING (MPTT)
If you’re Māori or Pasifika and aged 16-40, you might be able to get a scholarship to pay your course fees. This course is also part of the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) programme. You’ll also get one-on-one career coaching, help finding work, and other learner support. You can apply for the MPTT scholarship once you’ve enrolled in your course. Ask NZMA to help apply.

Completed NCEA (Level 1) with Mathematics and English subjects
Students who do not have NCEA Level 1 or 2 in Mathematics or English will need to demonstrate (by way of an entry assessment) that they have an adequate understanding of maths, reading, and writing to complete programme requirements and to meet the required industry level.
To meet health and safety requirements, the candidate must be able to carry out the practical components of the programme.
Additional for International Students:
For candidates who do not have English as the first language, the required English language skills are equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.0 or above in all bands.
